| THERMES – BLACK SAND/SHINGLE – SHALLOW- VERY WARM WATERS
Thermes is a hot tourist destination, the home of the Islands famous hot springs. The springs or whirlpool are fuelled by the under currents from the nearby Island of Nissyros (a sleeping volcano which you can visit) hence the beach being made up of black sand and shingle, the beach is quite small at approx 260m and is surrounded by impressive large dark stones left behind from the last time the volcano was active. The water temperatures are exceptionally high ranging from 40-47 ºC (104 -117 ºF), The springs were discovered by the Italian archaeologist Luciano Laurenzi in 1934 and the high calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium ion and chlorine and sulphur anion concentrations have ever since been said to offered relief to people suffering from rheumatics, arthritis and gynaecological problems. The beach is well organized, with facilities for swimming, sun beds, and brollies. The area has a few traditional tavernas offering cool refreshments and a snack, but with Agios Fokas and Kos Town so close there’s no shortage of shops, accommodation and restaurants. Transport – Thermes has regular transport links with Kos Town a bus runs approx every 15 minutes how ever the car parking area the walk to the beach area will possibly take 10 minutes if you’re not good on your feet.
